I came into work just as the bakers were heading out, and in passing one of them wanted to make sure I could fill the cake order he put in for a Pokemon ball cake for next day pick-up. It took me a good hour to realize what I had agreed to, and no one was around when I announced “Challenge accepted,” but a last minute shaped cake is nothing to take lightly. This is my first Pokeball cake, but not my first dome cake.
This is made from a chocolate cake filled with custard, which made it very interesting when turning it from a cylinder into a dome. The cake is also iced with ganache, which created a little difficulty when adding color. Most people would simplify and throw on a layer of fondant, but we don’t use fondant. So, I went with a thin layer of buttercream and ganache for the detail work.
Pikachu is made out of white chocolate. At first glance he looks feisty and ready for battle, but he’s actually a little angry. Someone used up all the lemon curd right before I needed to fill an order for a half sheet of lemon cake. That same someone put in a crazy cake order and let me know only one day in advance. Thus, they get the wrath of my tiny yellow chocolate fist.
