Most popular for his Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, I caught up with Rick Riordan on tour with his latest book Serpent’s Shadow at Third Place Books. You couldn’t meet a nicer guy. I first became aware of Rick Riordan when the film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief came to theaters. What caught my attention was that someone had breathed new life into ancient mythology, and made it exciting for the young generation. His latest series, the Kane Chronicles, takes place in the same universe, but revolves around Egyptian mythology.
I’m a huge fan of mythology in general. The stories and characters created in ancient times are amazing, and so many of their old world ideals still hold lessons that ring true even in modern times. You also have to give Mr. Riordan credit for getting kids excited about reading, nearly 900 event attendees can attest to that, and that is why I decided that man deserved a cupcake.
The eye of horace seemed the most appropriate on top of a red velvet cupcake. There was a bit of delay coming down from Canada after Mr. Riordan’s last stop, and I was a little worried he would be too busy for a cupcake. Let me reiterate for the record, you could never meet a kinder person, kind of like that awesome kooky teacher you had back in high school that got you super excited about physics or history or calculus. I can’t wait to see what he writes next.
