My co-worker sent me a text with a last minute cake order. He needed “owls, mushrooms, rainbow, and unicorn in awesome colors.”
It’s difficult to develop a full concept on the fly, so the first 2 ideas that popped into my head were neon 80′s or 60′s vintage. Secretly, I’ve always wanted to tackle 60′s vintage. Those old school woodland creatures with the big eyes and needlepoint detail work bring back memories from my childhood of flipping through my mother’s craft books. I was really happy my co-worker let me try 60′s vintage. This is all my own work based on several ideas I found online of vintage craft projects and memories.
The unicorn came out looking like a My Little Pony with the color combination, which was a happy happenstance. Mixing the colors was a challenge. I had to check almost every shade with a co-worker because if you stare at colors long enough it gets hard to actually see them. If I make 2 dozen bear cupcakes, I’ll notice just one of them has no ears or no eyes when I’m putting them in the cake case because if you look at them long enough they all just blend together.
This was the first time I used mustard yellow, burnt orange, eggplant purple, pea green, and robin egg blue. I don’t plan on using them again anytime soon, but I think they made for a pretty groovy cake. I also would like to note, I have no idea what this cake was for, but for an art charge, I could definitely reproduce this design or something similar.
