A customer came in looking for a Curious George cake, but sadly, I couldn’t deliver because of copyright laws. However, we were able to come up with an alternative.
The customer told me her son really liked the part in the Curious George movie where he went swimming in the ocean, so I came up with this design.
The difficult part of this was figuring out what a monkey swimming would look like. I’ve come to realize that a drawing of someone holding their breath looks straight up weird, so I gave the monkey a look of wonder instead. I used Curious George as my base and made up my own monkey to create what I call a ‘distant cousin’ look-a-like. I made the blue swirly to imitate light moving through water, although, based on a recent customer complaint, I may never do this again because it turns out many people don’t know I do it on purpose and assume I don’t know how to mix color into icing.
I made sea creatures all the way around the cake. I love ocean themed cakes. Sometimes I make the fish realistic, and sometimes I have fun making up my own, although, they sometimes take on a life of their own, especially since they’re so small. The little pink fish I made on the right was intended to be a long nosed fish, like a longnose gar, but it ended up looking just like a dolphin.
This is a Fruit and Cream cake with cream cheese frosting, hence the bright colors. The child is also allergic to chocolate, so the chocolate brown color is made with food color.
