I only recently became aware of Gilda’s club, and it was an honor to get the chance to donate some desserts for one of their fundraising auctions.
I was enjoying a burger at 8 oz. Burger Bar in Capitol Hill right by the window when I noticed a big red door right across the street. The sign for the building said it was Gilda’s Club. Gilda Radner just so happens to be my favorite SNL actor of all time, and I wondered if was in some way related to the cancer that claimed her life far too early. I googled the group on my phone and found out I was right. Gilda Club is a place where people affected by cancer, either their own or that of someone close to them, can come and just hang out, participating in social events, support groups, and workshops.
Shortly after my discovery, a friend of mine from culinary school sent out an email looking for donations for an upcoming dessert auction being held at Gilda’s Club. I jumped at the opportunity and came up with this cake.
I wanted to do something super girly, so I started with a Chocolate Lovers cake and covered it in shiny pink fondant. The beads around the bottom are purple hard candies and the butterflies are made out of chocolate.
I also made a dozen strawberries with a cutesy theme, but I figured I’ve got enough pictures of dipped strawberries on this site that everyone already has a pretty good idea of what they would’ve looked like. There were lots of other delicious desserts available at the auction, and I hope I’ll be able to help out in future events.
