Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer is a woman of many talents. I met her at Third Place Books promoting her brand new book Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective: The Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit. Most famous for her role as Minny in The Help for which she won an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe, just to name a few, Octavia Spencer has no intention of being a one trick pony. Her book is written for middle school readers, and she’s already signed on for a second installment. Her reason for writing this series is just one of many reasons why I believe she deserves a cupcake.
During her Q&A session at Third Place Books, Ms. Spencer told the audience how she has difficulty reading, especially when she was growing up. Mystery novels helped engage her and were easier to read, so she specifically set out to write a mystery book of her own in hopes of helping out kids who might be facing the same struggles she did. When Ms. Spencer won her Academy Award she announced that she wanted to immediately start giving back. She’s already been part of several committees including a group that’s working to tackle childhood obesity and has a great deal of passion to do much more. I also have to mention a film she was in more recently than The Help called Fruitvale Station, which was not only an amazing film, but it also brings attention to an incident that should not be overlooked and a life that should not be forgotten.
Since it’s December, I gave Octavia Spencer a Gingerbread cupcake with a chocolate gingerbread ninja on top in honor of her book. Being a new author promoting a book that kids generally haven’t heard of yet is no easy task, but I think Ms. Spencer handled it like a champ. She was open to any and all questions about her book, her life, her love of food, and upcoming projects. I’m sad to hear that the Murder She Wrote re-boot fell through because I would have loved to have seen her in that role. She was lovable and sweet with deep rooted southern charm. Plus, she looked amazing. I wish I had a full outfit picture because I really like her style. I can’t believe she’s in her 40′s because she’s got the energy and spark of someone at least 10 years younger, but I guess her wisdom and no-nonsense attitude hint at her real age. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Octavia Spencer.
