I signed up with Icing Smiles a while back after reading an article in Bake magazine. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to pull it off, but here is my first cake. I’ve seen many of the amazing cakes on the Icing Smiles website, and my first thought was: I do not have that much time in my schedule. When I got my Call to Action email I blocked out as much time as I could for decorating and here’s what I came up with.
It’s a Minecraft cake with a personalized twist. Most of the cakes in the pictures on the Icing Smiles website were covered in fondant, but the family requested a chocolate cake, so I decided it would be silly to cover up all that delicious ganache icing. The other thing that’s special about this cake is that the recipient is a geology enthusiast, so I made a little over 40 white chocolate gemstones in various colors. In the original sketch I noticed I forgot to include the fact that Caleb was turning 9, so the 9 decorated to look like a Creeper was a surprise addition. I knew the fondant would end up being a little droopy in the corners because of the soft nature of the ganache icing, but it was a sacrifice I was willing to make for the sake of the deliciousness. I’ve started to notice more people prefer the taste of icing over fondant, which has become both a blessing and a curse.
The family was very pleased with cake, especially Caleb. They emailed pictures of a very happy kid that I will treasure always. I’m really happy I signed up for Icing Smiles, and I can’t wait for my next Call to Action.
