This was for a first birthday photo shoot and by far the most elaborate smash cake I’ve ever made.
If you don’t know what Baby Metal is, yet, you’re missing out. I actually decided I didn’t need to know since the wonderful customer who asked me for the cake sent me all the pertinent design info in very well laid out collage.
However, curiosity got the better of me, and I’m happy I looked up some videos. They’re pretty talented and very entertaining to watch. The customer tells me they are her son’s favorite band. The cake is decorated with fondant, except the little stripes of black and white on the plaid, which are obviously icing. I’m also excited I got to use more tulle because I bought a roll of it for this cake, and I was worried no one else would want it.
The topper is gum paste, and that’s all I’m going to say on it because as far as the world is concerned, it just magically appeared on the cake all on its own.
The plaid was a challenging, but I’ve done camouflage and I’ve done paisley, so I figured I could do this, too. I draw the line at houndstooth, though.
